In my practice, I see dry tissues often. It’s not because we live in the desert either. In fact, the winter is dryer than the summer. If the tissues are well hydrated and the skin is well cared for, summer skin will have more natural oils, built-in sun protection.
The dryness I see comes from just not drinking water. On our countdown, number 4 is: Dehydration.
It’s hard to believe that I need to actually teach this point.
We need water to thrive and survive. Without it, we shut down. Shutting down is painful.
Your body has a hierarchy of needs – it knows which organs and tissues are most critical for survival and health and will keep those protected and alive and thriving at all costs to the other tissues in the body. It is truly a Super Suit.
In the case of dehydration, your body will extract “water” from your outer-most soft tissues (hair, skin, muscles, etc.) and transport it to your vital organs (heart, brain, kidneys, etc.) for survival.
Dehydrated skin looks wrinkled and worn, flaky. Did you see “Something About Mary”? Scary.
Dehydrated hair is stringy.
Dehydrated muscles are also stringy, like guitar strings, and they hurt.
I trained for a figure competition one summer, and getting close to the show, I was supposed to drink very little water in order to dehydrate the body. This allowed the strings of muscle fibers to “pop” and be visible. In this phase of “training” and creating the art of muscle definition, I was in so much pain and agony. It hurt to get up in the morning and put my feet on the floor.
Remedy: Really? Do I really need to tell you? DRINK WATER!!! Yes, you will get vital fluids from fruits and vegetables, but you still need to drink water. And if you eat a lot of meat, you need to drink even more water.
I have also recommended to some of my “Paleo Diet” clients that they add more complex carbohydrates to their eating regimen when I notice the stringiness in their tissues. The carbohydrates will support the body in staying hydrated.
Just so we’re clear, I did say WATER– not tea, not coffee, not vodka – WATER (H2O).
I’m not saying to stay away from these tasty beverages completely (although you must stay away from soda – it has no redeeming qualities whatsoever) –
I enjoy tea; I love coffee (I’m a Starbucks Gold Card Holder!); and vodka…well there’s a little bit of Tony Stark in all of us!
General rule of thumb is half your body weight in ounces of water per day…slurp!
